There's an option whether or not to post with Karma bonus. I always disable Karma bonus. I imagine Timothy does likewise.
There's no reason to scream... My reasoning goes that just because I've managed to get Score: 5 a few times in the past and by and large avoided to be modded down doesn't mean that the posts I make now or in the future deserve a higher default score.

I miss the Doctor. His syndicated show is no longer aired by any stations that I receive to the best of my knowledge and I have listened for him on channels that were more likely to be the sort to carry him. I have not investigated online solutions. I probably should... I think I will so thanks for the unintended mental prodding though I would not be surprised if he didn't produce his show any longer. I shall check and see what the mighty Google leads me to.

Checking legitimate sources indicates that I can buy low quality versions of his show for a couple of dollars and high quality versions of some of those (some require membership to the site) for four bucks each. I have no issues with paying for the content and would love to support him by purchasing the content so I think I will go blow some money on the show and download them so I can listen to them while I travel. You can disable the Karma bonus. The problem with the bonus is that it adds one to the displayed score, but is not counted for achievements. Once you have a score:5 (which is really score 4 + 1 bonus), people stop modding you up so you never make it to a "real" +5. They can still mod you up one more point, but most people don't know so they don't. And this makes you miss achievements that require a "real" +5 (comedian, for example)

I am not sure why but it seems that I get a pack of mod points every time I post. That is what it seems like though I seldom post anything as of late. Basically if I come here today, as I have, in a posting mood and add some content then I end up with mod points even if I do not have my comments moderated. I am not sure how that works or why it works that way. IIRC there was a raw feed dump where everything going into the database was shown live -- i don't recall the url for it, but now they have the firehose... too lazy to check the source for how they do it, and google was no help finding it.

Timothy - this poll is interesting because it speaks to people's perception of themselves.
Slashdot actually has these statistics. It'd be really interesting to go back and run the numbers, and see if the polling is inline with reality. We don't often have a way to verify the accuracy of any poll - but in this case, we do.

I'm not in a rush to create a history of things I've said online. Unfortunately, because I am always an Anonymous Coward, comments I have made in the past get disregarded because of my AC status, independent of posting quality. I often have things I would like to add to a conversation here, but because I value my anonymous status more than earning credibility, I just don't bother anymore.

I see this and am disappointed that people do this so frequently. Yup, on some occasions I have seen AC posts that are deserving of being up modded or down. Those posts are very rare, and points would be better spent on named accounts. If I see two posts with similar messages posted closely in time, I spend the mod points on the named account even if their post shows 2nd by wall clock.
I don't have any issues with people posting as AC, but it's called a coward for a reason. All anonymous people are the same account with no accountability and no ability for anyone else to know if they are having a conversation or trading off between multiple people. The guy posting an informative link looks identical to the guy posting the racist crap.
I don't receive mod points often enough to squander them.
As to the person above you not wanting a history of postings, I find it sad that people are afraid to express their opinions, and refuse to debate their positions.

I rarely post, so it doesn't apply to me, but I see enough comments from other people that get modded down unjustly. It's why I browse this site at -1 at all times now. The most useless group-think comments get modded to +5, while the most original, thought-provoking comments end up at -1 a lot of the time.

I've not found that to be true. I don't get a whole lot of troll posts, but they do show up from time to time. Occasionally they are deserved, most of the time it's clear that the moderator missed something obvious or just didn't like my attempt and humor or sarcasm.
But mod points seem to be pretty random....
And it would be awfully hard to define 'misbehaving' around here.

Ten to fifteen years ago, a whole lot of my posts were very frequently modded up to +5 and generated tons of replies and interesting discussion.
Sometime between then and now, that diminished and now it seems like most of my posts don't get any moderation or replies or anything. Every now and then there's a thread that generates interest, but for the most part it seems like nobody cares about the things I want to discuss anymore.
Slashdot is dying. Or maybe I'm just dying. Maybe both. We're all dying.
One thing I will say that I still love about Slashdot is the infrequency at which I've ever gotten downmodded despite the controversiality of anything I ever say, so long as it's well-thought-out and stated in a civil manner (which I try to always do). In fact things that are controversial to both sides of a given debate, but well-put, tend to get the most upmods (a lot of +1 Interesting or +1 Insightful).
In contrast, on other websites with more basic +1 Agree / -1 Disagree voting, it seems like the only things that get seriously upvoted are the most inane, innocuous, unoffensive and mainstream things that don't make anybody think, or things that cater perfectly to the ever-fluctuating groupthink mood and put down acceptable targets; whereas anything that doesn't fit nicely into the popular mold of Us vs Them, or falls on the "Them" side of the groupthink then and there, just gets downvoted to oblivion. Makes for much less interesting discussion.

Ditto. I have been downmodded more recently, but interestingly that always tends to be on articles that have country-polarizing issues, so I'm guessing that the Russian/Chinese PR team didn't appreciate some of my comments.

In my experience, getting modded is more about getting in the conversation early. Probably few moderators come back to topics, so posting a day later makes for very few mods. That is if they are will to read deep into the comment.
Maybe the change in the number of mods has to do with more posts or how quick you are to read a story. I don't know the formula of number of moderators either. Lots of factors could play into it, including "dying" depending on what you think it means for it to die.

If you are not being down-modded you are not saying anything controversial. Particularly anything that suggests that there might be some sexism in CS, as an example, will be hammered down fast and hard by MRAs. If you are lucky you might get some counter-mods and end up in the black.

If you want to get upmods and replies on Slashdot, the key is to post *early*. I know this is kind of obvious, but it is very much true in my experience. I would guess that at least 80% of comments are made within the first 8-12 hours of a story going live. Once the story has fallen off the "front page"-- forget it. Either people have moved on to other stories, or else the story has accumulated 500+ comments and your own contribution is going to be buried.

I've been thinking about writing a scraper for a while now, to gather some stats on Slashdot and do some analysis. It's not really my area but isn't exactly difficult. I think there would be some very interesting data in there. You could see what periods people were active, and how moderation changed over time, and maybe even how the political centre ground shifted.

I would. Mainly because anyone who uses the word "sheeple" ironically points out that they aren't creative enough to come up with a semi original or at least entertaining insult.

You haven't changed, Slashdot has. I'm a long time Slashdot Anonymous Coward since late 1999... The conversations here have gone drastically down hill. I remember in the early 2000s Slashdot was such an awesome place because the technical discussions were great and there was also more tolerance for well thought out opinions that went against the Slashdot "hive mind" group think. Rock star geeks like John Carmack would frequently post on stories (just to use him as an example of a former poster).

I do not wish to seem like an ass but, perhaps, you should not come back then?
