What is the meaning of this turtle? I went to the website and all they had was Carvey saying "I am going to be your master of disguise" over and over in a weird voice.
Do a search - I found the trailer in RealVideo format (right off of a Sony server, which is where the official site is, although the official site only lists Quicktime).
Ye Ghods - this is possibly the worst looking trailer I've seen in many a year. The sad thing is, I watch (and enjoy) ultra low budget and fan made productions, and enjoy them. This trailer, which presumably has some of the best moments in the film, has no humor whatsoever. The "turtle" moment is passably interesting - for a SF convention outfit.
By the three Kennedys[1], this is a most wretched production.
[1] Okay, that's it - I'm starting a Slashdot journal, and making a SF reference in each. Points go to whoever can nail them first.
The only thing worse than hearing Dana Carvey's voice repeating that horrid chant is hearing my girlfriend laugh at it every time it's on the tube.
Get used to it. It's the catch phrase of the summer.
In front of the tube? Try in millions of bedrooms across America. It's going to replace "Yes! YES! YES!!!" from When Harry Met Sally [imdb.com] as THE Most Faux-Passionate Movie Quote!
We all have seen movies that are so pathetically dumb (purposely or not) that they are simply hilarious. Dana Carvey isnt a fool, my bet is that this will be a half decent movie.
Run over by a WWII forklift? Where the heck did that one come from?!? I'm just curious because my summer job this year is driving an actual WWII forklift, and I've never seen or heard any other references to WWII forklifts, ever.
Oh, and BTW, to all you guys who answered that you'd like to be run over by a WWII forklift, I can arrange that;-)
Well, it's one of those things, her father was a train nut, and so when he got tired of ho scale, he , uh, scaled up. He picked up a private car, a caboose, two passenger cars and 3 boxcars and placed them on the property. The private car needs some work, but it is tres' cool.
He passed away recently, and they were willed to the sacramento rail museum. The two passenger cars were picked up this week. They hauled two 80 foot 110,000lb cars to the train yards in sacramento. Quite a site to see. (I haven't posted the pics yet).
Usually quite accurate with their percentage. Just let more reviews pile in... I'm waiting for Ebert's take on this one. He usually does quite good with trashing bad movies, such as actually suggesting another movie in his Scooby Doo review (he suggested Lilo and Stitch).
Carvey? So what? Everyone knows he's a crackpot anyway. If this movie is truly as horrible as everyone says, the one I feel sorry for is Brent Spiner. He's been one of my favorite actors for a long time and has had many excellent broadway hits even though he's never landed a particularly large role in any non-Star Trek movie.
I actually liked Scooby Doo..... if you look at it as just a dumb movie and enjoy it for that. It's the whole "it's so dumb it's funny" thing. Plus Velma's such a hottie
Ebert's tagline "This movie is not good at disguising itself as a comedy".
Seriously. It was in the paper this morning.
It also clocks in at 65 minutes + 15 minutes of b-roll credits. From what I can tell, Ebert hated it. Gave it a "D" on our paper's rating scale. (What does that translate into in thumbs? "1 thumb most of the way down"?).
Sheer genius cannot even begin to properly address this cinematic achievement, to call it any less is an insult. Dana Carvey, on the surface, plays a bumbling Italian waiter who inherits the power of disguise; however, if you dig a bit deeper & peel away the layers, you'll find a motion picture which is a scathing, yet biting social political statement on society as a whole. One cannot begin to hopefully comprehend or decipher all the psychological & stereotypical boundaries this film breaks. It is a surprise to find this film in mainstream theaters as a film on this level & caliber would normally only be found in the finest arthouse theaters. If you plan on seeing Master of Disguise, I suggest keeping your afternoon free, as after viewing, no after witnessing it, you'll need the rest of the afternoon to invest in deciphering the dense narrative. Admittingly some of the jokes were over my head, but all truly great comedies take a bit of effort for comprehension. Only for serious film viewers & students of the artform as a whole.

Out of any dist. I can think of, Slack 2.0 would probably be the *best* one to install on a P90 laptop through a slip connection. Now Mandrake 8, that's a different story...
You could get a bunch of options from a particular Weird Al song (I forget the name, it wasn't an actual parody). It is sung like some romantic song, but he keeps saying that he'd rather do these things than "spend one more minute with you". IIRC, some of them were: Glue my nostrils together with crazy glue Get a hundred thousand paper cuts on my face Clean all of the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue Dive naked on a huge pile of thumb tacks
We didn't have nails to drive into our eyeballs. We didn't even have eyeballs, we had eyecubes. We had to file down the corners if we wanted eyeballs. After we filed them down, if we wanted to drive pointed objects under them, we had to carve wooden spikes out of oak trees. We didn't have hammers, either. Someone would have to ram their head into the wooden spikes to drive them under our newly-filed eyeballs.
At least you had oak trees! When I was a youngin, we didn't have natural trees of any sort. If we wanted trees, we had to build 'em out of dirt! And then we had to let 'em petrify before we could make pointy things out of 'em. After that, and only after that, could we drive pointy things into ourselves. And you could forget about eyes! No sir, we didn't have 'em, didn't need 'em, and didn't want 'em! Running blindly into petrified dirt trees was what we did for fun!
Now turn down that awful ruckus you call music! And get out of my yard!
You got paid? What luxury! We had to pay in a pint of our own blood every day for right to drag ourselves backwards and uphill for 10 miles on broken glass so that we could work for 30 hours a day with single 30 second lunch break during which we drank molten lead and ate chunks of anthracite. You kids just dont know how good you have it now.
This isn't intended as a flame or anything, but... Where did the sudden obsession with bashing CNN come from? To the best of my knowledge, CNN had never been mentioned on Slashdot (did I miss a story or something?), then there were suddenly two polls (the other one was "Best Sci-Fi Costumes") with options that bash CNN. Can someone fill me in?
That said, the options about driving nails under your eyeballs and about WWII forklifts were quite arbitrary, but I assume that those were meant to be arbitrary.
My feeling - or rather my hope - is that people, in general, are beginning to come the realization that CNN's content is actually 98% info-tainment crap... Edited, buffed, polished, and prepackaged for convenient consumption by the unquestioning masses...
Agreed. Has anyone else noticed how child abduction stories are en vogue in the news media these days? I will qualify my remarks and say that I have never married or had kids. I can't begin to imagine how trying that would be on a parent.
That said, I don't get it with the rash of these stories lately. What am I supposed to do when a kid gets napped at gunpoint in California (I live in Kentucky)? I'm empathize for parents who have suffered this experience, but this is not newsworthy to anyone unless it is _local_. This is cheap journalism that preys on soccer moms' fears.
The problem with Fox News is that it's not actually news. It's really speculation, commentary and opinion presented as fact.
I agree with you on CNN, too. CNN is about pacifying people to give them the news they expect, but don't present anything too harsh or gritty which might alter their consumer-driven, SUV driving minds.
PBS is still pretty good (though they've blurred the line somewhat between underwriting and advertising and that could lead to sacrificed journalistic integrity). If you want televised newscast, I highly recommend watching "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" [pbs.org] on PBS (typically around 5-6 PM local time -- you can look it up here [pbs.org]).
There are quite a few problems with the media in general in this country and I think the book Rich Media, Poor Democracy [amazon.com] by Robert McChesney explains it best.
P.S. I am acutely aware of the perceived irony by decrying consumerism in one paragraph and then listing an Amazon url in another -- but I'm not trying to say that all consumerism is bad; just rabid consumerism.;)
You say CNN doesn't have a liberal slant, even though some on the right say it does. You then say that Fox news is absoultly conservative. Sounds like what some people on the left say....
Do I detect a hint of bias in the apparent conflict in your statements?
I watch FoxNews (my bias emerges), and I have never ONCE heard them call themselves conservative.
Alan Colmes and Greta van Susteren are on fox news and not conservative, and are infact liberal. Bill O'reilly is in-your-face opinionated, but he is just as hard on republicans and democrats, and when he speaks on a topic, he has both sides on to debate (not something you would see from a bias network). FoxNews isn't conservative, it is simply more thorough about exploring topics other networks do not. Presenting the other side may make it seem they are bias towards that side, but I would argue it to be the case that other networks are bias for excluding the other side of the argument.
In any event, it is just plain wrong for you to say "CNN is unbias, even though lots of fanatics say it is. Oh yea, FoxNews is SOOOO bias!"....certainly seems to me you are a fanatic like the kind that you are trying to discredit.
The right wing is convinced CNN has a heavily liberal slant. It doesn't, but these are the same people who think Dan Rather's a pinko leftie. Fox News is unabashedly conservative. So I guess the assumption is depending on your political leaning, watching either CNN or Fox would be extremely unpleasant.
This cracked me up.
So restated: "The networks that agree with my personal political, leftist affiliation, are non-biased. Sometimes it may seem that they are biased, but I agree with them, so they aren't. Fox, on the other hand, doesn't slant stories towards the left, so therefore they are biased."
I just spent 7 hours backing up, formating, restoring, formatting again, installing, repairing, formatting again, restoring, and repairing. Yes, I don't know what I am doing. Now I could probably do it in an hour or two after all the experience.
I remember the good old days when disk drives came with utilities that would automatically copy partitions and worked. This one had one, except it doesn't work on NTFS partitions. MS failed to let me know that when I installed W2K a few months ago.
Next time, install, reload, which is what I did with Linux anyway... that only took 20 minutes and one reboot.
I'd like to know how many impersonations he does in the movie? All the ads show is a George W impression and a lot of made up characters. Anyone remember his Woody Allen impression? It was more realistic than the REAL Woody Allen. It's a shame that a man that talented has been lowered to "turtle turtle turtle."
Oh well, it can't be as bad as that Carrot Top movie a few years back.
I saw an episode of Nightline or something last week that had a section on Dana Carvey and his new movie, I think the number of different characters he plays is around 36.
It's a shame everyone is calling him a "has been".. the only reason he's been absent since Wayne's World 2 is because of major medical problems with his heart. He had surgery done, and the surgeon hooked up the wrong tube!!! He nearly died, but had corrective surgery done just in time. All Carvey wanted from the surgeon was an apology, but the guy wouldn't even admit he had made a mistake. Because of this, Carvey successfully sued the guy, and gave all the money to charity.
A great, talented guy. Too bad this movie looks like a real stinker... because I feel like this guy really DOES deserve a decent comeback.
I voted for the SP3 option, as the most painful and distressing forced activity I will be faced with soon.
But just what is this poll about? Can somebody explain just what this show is, what its about, and what the turtle reference does?
Without knowing a thing about Master of Disguise, it sounds pretty bad given the depravity of tortures listed (except the cowboy neal option, which sounds kinda fun). So somebody dump on the rest of us what specific things make this show BAD.
whats wrong with SP3? I installed it yesterday morning and it was quick and painless. Well maybe not particularly quick, but it was only a few minutes. Did I miss something?
The real question here is "are you a member of the Turtle Club?". There is only one right response. Do any of you young people know the answer? If not, go visit a retirement home and find the answer. You will be enlightened. More from tomorrow if nobody comes up with the right answer.
Speaking of SP3, it ruined two of my coworkers' machines today. Needless to say, no one else in the whole place is bound to install it now. Just a friendly warning.
Makes me wonder... am I the only slashdotter who listens to Art Bell?? AM radio is great. I live in ottawa, ontario (home of the Ottawa Linux Symposium, of course!!) and with my sangean radio can pick up the show as far as Cleaveland and New York, with no special antenna...
These days, except for the Internet, AM radio is generally the best place to hear a spectrum of political opinion on a spectrum of issues (rather than just "save the beached whales"). The one exception to that is my favorite radio show, Democracy Now! [democracynow.org], which is generally on FM. C-Span is a good source of primary material (quotes from politicians), but the government-backed NPR is too tame compared to AM radio.
Of course, it takes a critical mind to find the gems from the raving lunatics on AM, but at least it's not sterile.
Why, amongst the tortuous options of waxing Cowboyneal's car and the like, is there an option for listening to AM radio, implying it to be a bad thing?
AM radio has a lot to offer, and the fact that it still exists is testimony to that. Here in the UK AM not only broadcasts two independent national radio stations (bear in mind there is only one on FM), it also has a whole host of other local commercial stations, a wealth of restricted license stations (hospital and student radio, etc), and a growing number of community non-profit stations.
Put that against FM: There's the BBC stations. (local and national) - fair enough. There is one independent national, Classic FM. Not everyone's cup of tea, but also fair enough. But then most of the rest is just not worth the bandwidth it's broadcast on. So many local FM music stations wear the same old tired brand and pump out the same old stuff day in, day out.
Programming wise, while not being entirely innocent of all charges, AM still has a lot to offer.
As far as broadcast quality goes, OK, AM is at a disadvantage - especially within close proximity to a 'puter. But AM can sound good - our college radio station sounds absolute lovely. If quality bothers you, then I suggest (if you're in the UK) you get your act together and try and get something sorted for digital radio in the Communication Bill [communicat...ill.gov.uk], other wise the trend towards slashing bitrates to squeeze in extra stations on the DAB multiplexes - disgracefully led by the BBC, I might add - will not get the regulation it sorely deserves. We are supposed to believe that Digital Radio is the future of radio, but if what they're doing to the bitrates is allowed to go unnoticed then;ll digital radio will have shot itself in the foot and be premanently crippled below its potential before it even gets going.
You'll have to hurry though - the last day of consultation on the Communication Bill is today!
I'm not a big Dana Carvey fan but the trailers make the movie look funny. There's a place for fun escapist entertainment done well. I'm going to check this out.
It's a kid's movie....it's supposed to be trite and silly. (God forbid we make our children think.)
But seriously, don't get all bent out of shape over this movie, it's not meant for your age group. Think about it...Gammy Num Nums? The Turtle Guy? The PG rating? Dana's even said in many many interviews that it's for kids because he has a 10 year old and doesn't want to make anything his kid can't watch til he's old enough.
I think it's kind of sad that "News for Nerds" won't run an article on a major update for an operating system run on over 90% of computers out there, despite endless submissions. Nonetheless, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 [microsoft.com] has been released, and includes new updates [microsoft.com], along with all the updates from SP1, SP2, Security Rollup, and Installer 2.0. There's also the ability to more easily choose which application will be the default for web browsing, email, and media playing, a la this [slashdot.org] Slashdot article. More importantly, however, is the change in the EULA. From BugTraq:
Be sure to read the new EULA/privacy statement for Windows update, it has an interesting portion about how Windows Update and Automatic Update (which gets installed with SP3) can, by agreeing to this license, send the following pieces of info to Microsoft, this was posted on the MS focus list by Javier Sanchez:
"With the latest version of Windows Update (essentially a mandatory download and now part of SP3) you consent to sending the following information to Microsoft:
* Operating-system version number and Product Identification number * Internet Explorer version number * Version numbers of other software * Plug and Play ID numbers of hardware devices
This is stated in the "Windows Update Privacy Statement" which you can read at You can also follow the "About Windows Update" link off the WindowsUpdate page. Don't bother trying to right-click, they've made sure to disable that."
Scary. A poll option is better than nothing, I suppose.
I think it looks pretty damn funny. Plus, Dana Carvey's been through a lot with almost dying and all - I'm impressed that he's able to be in show business at all...
So would someone tell me where all the negative backlash is coming from? Did he say Linux is bad or something? Would you rather he dressed up as a penguin, instead of a turtle?
To me, it looks like he's trying to follow in Mike Myer's footsteps...after Wayne's World, Mike managed to parlay his characters (a lot of them the England/Scottish bits) into multiple roles in a movie, and this "Master of Disguises" is a vehicle for Dana Carvey to try to do the same thing.
I wish him luck...I don't think the new Carvey movie looks *quite* as bad as everyone here is implying. I like some his standup.
Most people see it as nothing but silly and absurd film, but few understand the interesting factual (but outrageously exaggerated) background story.
"Nothing But Trouble" is a spoof on the corruption-filled court system of the Scranton, PA area. A family known as the DeNaples, who have extensive mob ties, own a massive junkyard outside of the city. It is well known that the DeNaples have many ties to local law enforcement, and many a body are suspected of being hidden in the hundreds of acres of the DeNaples junkyard.
The movie, while downright idiotic in some aspects, was very entertaining to me because I am familiar with it's background.
It rarely is a good thing. The SNL cast have been responsible for some of the worst movies in the history of film. Think of all the horrid Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, etc. movies that you've seen. Perhaps to say that good SNL cast movies are rare is a bit harsh, as each well-known cast member has made at least one decent film (The Jerk is one of my favorites), but still, I think the collective hurt that the SNL-cast has done to my eyes is not balanced by laughing at the occasional Adam Sandler movie...
I can think of one ex-SNL lad that's done very well. Mike Meyers. Waynes World? Austin Powers? I admit that a lot of stuff other ex-SNL cast has done has been junk, but it's not fair to lump it all together.
Just my $0.02, adjusted for the Canadian exchange rate.
Though I agree anything based off of an SNL skit is doomed. I'm gunna vote a slow WWII forklift if Mad TV gets a skit based movie out...
I guess we should feel glad that the project to bring Mike Myers' Dieter character to the screen fell through. Myers reportedly canceled it [go.com] when he decided that there was no way anybody could write a good enough script to make the movie work! Now if only a bunch of other ex-SNL people had the same fortitude.
OBTrading Places: Many stock boards have quoted Trading Places in the last year or so... every time the market burps off a few hundred points, somebody throws in the obligatory "Turn those machines back on!!" and "Beeks! Where the hell is Beeks?!" Ah yes... one of my favorites.
Think of all the horrid Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, etc. movies that you've seen.
Are you just young or have you forgotten the original Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Stripes, National Lampoon's Vacation, Animal House, etc. These were all great movies.:-)

I remember the good old days when disk drives came with utilities that would automatically copy partitions and worked. This one had one, except it doesn't work on NTFS partitions. MS failed to let me know that when I installed W2K a few months ago.
